Learning Outcome 3

Technical preparations: ‘warm-up’ techniques, scales, arpeggios, other technical exercises to improve

tone and technique relevant to the instrument or voice; formulate effective practise routines; pieces for

performance thoroughly rehearsed and learnt

Physical preparation: eg relaxation and/or breathing exercises as appropriate, concentration techniques, exercises to control nerves, preparatory performances at the venue and in front of an audience

Other preparations: instrument (where applicable) is in working order and in-tune eg new strings, serviceable reeds/mouth pieces, correct beaters, voice is warmed up; rehearsal with accompanist if one is being used.

Solo Performances Evaluated

All in all I felt that my performances went well, I will however take a detailed look at each one and how I could improve it.

Foo Fighters - Rope
I think that this one went pretty smoothly. There were no obvious mistakes anywhere, and the sound balance was good. There was one problem though, and that was where the song suddenly stopped playing for a moment halfway through. This however was not a fault in my playing, but just a technical difficulty. If I knew why it happened, I would try to make sure it doesn't happen again, but it has never done that before!

Michael Jackson - Heartbreaker
The first thing I think that I could have done more smoothly was the start of the song. I didn't start playing myself until the second or third bar in. To counter this in future performances, I would set a few bars of silence before the song starts, followed by a click so that I can come in on the first beat of the song. Other than that, I think that this performance went exceptionally well considering it was about 80% improvised. I often find that I can't improvise well in front of an audience, but due to the relaxed feel of the audience/venue + the fact that I could shut myself off from them a bit due to wearing isolation headphones, I was able to play well. I made a few small slip ups on hard fills, however I do not think that these are detrimental to the overall performance.

There was one slightly bigger slip though, and this was at the start of the second drum solo/breakdown where I had to stop playing and move my bass drum back towards me, as it had slipped forwards causing my pedal to get jammed. In future I could avoid this by taking a rug and setting up on that.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Around The World
This one was well practiced and therefore was a pretty solid performance. I have noticed when watching back however that some of my timing of correct rhythm was a bit off - for example the small fill at 0:54 seconds into the video. If I was to perform this again, I would try to tighten that up a little.

The Strokes - Under Cover of Darkness
Again, I am generally happy with this performance, as I didn't really make any obvious mistakes. What I did notice however, was that I have a tendency to rush some of my fills - especially in the choruses when I did rolls around the kit. I also rushed slightly into the breakdown (Just before I start playing the ride cymbal). Although this is only noticeable if you watch closely, it is still something I could work on for future performances. Other than that though, I think I played it pretty perfectly.

Maroon 5 - One More Night
I am pleased with how this performance went. I gave a lot of attention to the fills in the three 'breakdowns' in the song (0:52, 1:53 and 2:35). I was quite pleased with the parts I'd written for these bits and I played them to the standard I wanted to. I wanted to do fills with a metric modulation feel - i.e. playing a fill that is grouped as 4s, but as triplets, causing the original accent of each phrase to be moved around to strange beats of each bar. Each time however, these licks were to finish perfectly on the cymbal of beat 1 of the next bar. Although they are not 100% accurate, I still think they are pretty spot on, especially since 3 against 4 done in this way is quite hard - as it strays so far from the original beat.

The part I would like to improve is the drum roll back into the final chorus. Again, I seem to speed up here and when I come back in I start playing too slow and end up over compensating, it takes me 2 bars or so to get back in sync with the beat after this. I would like to improve that before I perform this again.

Guitar Composition
I find that I make more mistakes on guitar than I do on drums (Partly because it's my second instrument, and partly because it is so fiddly). At one point I made a mistake where I plucked the wrong string. This is something I would like to improve on as this happens quite a bit. Maybe I need to aim better! I am quite pleased on the whole though, as I only made that one very obvious mistake - the rest of it went quite smoothly. I would like to incorporate better dynamic range next time too to make it more intense and exciting for listeners.

Mexicana
The same goes for this guitar piece, really. At one point I accidentally played the wrong notes and had to correct myself (At 1:27). Other than that, I don't think there were any very obvious mistakes. I was pleased with the way I played it, adding my own feel and musicality to it. I particularly made lots of use of Rubato, drawing out certain notes, and speeding up on other bits to add excitement to the piece. I think it is a beautiful piece of music, and next time I will try to add more dynamics to it!

For the guitar pieces in general, I think it might be a good idea for me to try some kind of relaxation technique, as I often get very sticky hands and become very tense when performing classical guitar live. This makes it particularly hard to do certain slides and note changes. I find that I become clumsy when performing it. I might try some exercises and concentration techniques to try and get in the zone in the future.

Finally, overall I am pleased with my solo performances. I would love to have done it all as one big set, but unfortunately it wasn't possible, and was just impractical.

Learning Outcome 2

Elements of musicianship: accuracy of rhythm, pitch and intonation; expression; interpretation appropriate to the genre/style of the music; confidence

Communication: musical communication with accompanist/band if appropriate; musical communication with audience.

In order to do my 20 - 30 minutes of solo performance, I needed to find a suitable venue or event to perform at. Seeing as I am mainly a drummer, and drums are very loud, I couldn't do my performances at other venues and small events that my class mates performed at as it was just impractical. However, I eventually came across the Music On The Meadows festival happening in Henley which I got involved with organising. Since this was being held outside in a large open area, It seemed perfect to do some drum solos without deafening everyone. Unfortunately due to a busy schedule, I was only allocated a 10 minute set. For this reason I was only able to perform two of my drum pieces.

This is the first one I performed. It is a drum cover of Rope by the Foo Fighters. I managed to get hold of a drumless track, so all the drums you hear are me.

The second song I performed was a drum improvisation to Heartbreaker by Michael Jackson. I made sure to EQ the original track so that the original beat didn't interfere too much with the sound of my drums. Here is is.

Due to unfortunately not being able to do more than 10 minutes, I instead perfomed my other planned pieces at home on camera. This shows that I am able to play the pieces with the pressure of camera and microphones recording me. These were done in one live take.

This is a cover of Around The World by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

This is a cover of Under Cover of Darkness by The Strokes.

This is a cover of One More Night by Maroon 5.

I also performed the two guitar pieces I mentioned. The first one I played was my guitar composition. Here it is.

The second piece I played is called Mexicana:

Learning Outcome 1

Factors to be considered: balancing the programme; choosing pieces appropriate for: the venue, the audience, performer stamina levels; technical/musical difficulty of pieces; amount of preparation time needed before concert; availability of printed music and/or recordings; type of accompaniment required; availability of suitable equipment and personnel to operate it eg sound system, technical crew/operator.

Learning the pieces

For my guitar composition, I know it due to writing it myself, though I do have sheet music written out in case I forget it. I will learn Mexicana from sheet music, however I will play it with my own dynamics/tempo/feel - i.e. I will inject my own musicality into it.

Drum pieces aren't as critical when it comes to sheet music. I often prefer to learn them by ear. However, in order to get a few parts spot on for the Foo Fighters song, I got hold of the sheet music to check a few things. In all of the drum pieces however, I add my own fills and feel. I learnt Maroon 5, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Strokes by ear, and then came up with my own parts for example in Maroon 5 where no drums are even playing in the original. For michael jackson, I just improvise to the song and try to feel the music and play appropriately. I obviously 'over-play' a lot more though as it is meant to be a solo with the focus on the drumming, whereas if I was playing it in a band, I would not do nearly so many fills etc.

Planning

I found an event/venue that is suitable for drumming. Music On The Meadows is an outdoor festival with a big open field for people to watch from. This means that the drums won't be too loud! I am only allowed a 10 minute set though, meaning I can do just two of my drum pieces.

In order to make my performance work well, I've decided that I want to listen to the backing tracks through isolation headphones with a click. In order to do this, I will use Cubase. I have made  two versions of the song - one with a click and one with out. I have put them on different tracks. In order to make the version with no click come out of the PA system, but the version with the click in my headphones, I will use my audio interface as it has two stereo outputs. I set the track with the click to come out of stereo output 1 (Straight into my headphones), and set the version with no click to come out of stereo output 2 which I will output to the main mixing desk/PA system.

To make sure that everything goes smoothly on the day, I have made a list of all the equipment I need to take, and have been in contact with the sound engineer to check if he is happy with my plan. I also made sure to get a good sound check where we tested levels etc.

Update: The sound engineer is happy with my setup and has given me a sound check time.

My Audition CD:

Although I know it is not possible for me to play all of the planned pieces in one go, I have tried to balance the programme nevertheless - by including music of different genres. Foo Fighters are heavy rock, Red Hot Chili Peppers are funk rock, The Strokes are indie rock, Maroon 5 are pop, and Michael Jackson is more funky, ghospely pop. Also, while I am playing a set drum part for Foo Fighters for example, the Michael Jackson song is improvised. In order to break the drumming up and give people's ears a rest, I have the two guitar pieces I will do.

Here is an order I think would be appropriate:

Maroon 5 - One More Night (Because it was in the charts so a lot of people will know it)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Around the World (Because a lot of people also like them, and it contrasts in genre to Maroon 5)
My Guitar Composition (To break up the drumming)
The Strokes - Under Cover Of Darkness
Foo Fighters - Rope (Energetic and quite well known)
Mexicana (Relaxing, to break up the drumming)
Michael Jackson - Heartbreaker (The most impressive to finish off)
